What Do We Mean by Mystical Sobriety?
Have you ever felt as if you’re managing the day-to-day parts of your life without going beyond the surface? You might wonder, as CAC Core Faculty Dr. James Finley does: “How do I drop down into the authenticity of being present in the gift and miracle of my daily life?”
For those on the contemplative path of transformation, there are moments — sometimes born of great love, sometimes of great suffering, often of both — where we see with nondual clarity: shifting from ego and control to peace and surrender.
In those moments, after repeatedly spinning our wheels, we are finally forced to take another approach, perhaps one we have known about but have been avoiding for some reason. We’re simply present, honest, and awake. But often those moments of being fully present come and go. How can we sustain them?
That’s where the wisdom of mystical sobriety comes in. Mystical sobriety is the practice of learning to see your life truthfully, surrender it to Love, and live from a deeper awareness of God’s presence — especially through the healing of your wounds.
“We can only learn to know ourselves and do what we can — namely, surrender our will and fulfill God’s will in us.”
—St. Teresa of Ávila
Mystical Sobriety Helps Us Sustain Healing and Inner Peace
When you bring mystical sobriety into your spiritual journey, it means living from presence more consistently and authentically — not as a fleeting experience, but as an integrated way of being. These practices can become how you show up in your life and the world day after day, more healed and more whole.
“Is it possible you could live your whole life and die without ever having met the person that lived your life?”
—Thomas Merton
Invite Mystical Sobriety on Your Journey
Rather than offering a destination or a singular breakthrough, mystical sobriety is a commitment to ongoing healing work. It is a path of steady unfolding — one that involves letting go of attachments to find insight and healing, inviting transformation to take root and become part of daily life.

The Daily Meditations: The Power of Admitting
This meditation explores how what precedes admitting and makes admitting possible is hitting bottom. It’s very painful to admit that our lives have become unmanageable because we all need a sense of self-efficacy.
When you embark on a journey with mystical sobriety, we see that each moment of our lives can be filled with wholeness — what James Finley calls a “perpetual homecoming.”
