ReVision: What Do We Do With Christianity?
Registration for this event is closed.
About This Event
In times of uncertainty, we are invited to see with new eyes.
Look to the Christian contemplative traditions for wisdom to help meet this moment with clarity, courage, and compassion. Join us for ReVision: What Do We Do With Christianity?, a three-day gathering — in-person in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and online—hosted by the Center for Action and Contemplation (CAC).
An invitation to see with new eyes, ReVision is an opportunity to ask honest questions and engage Christianity as a living tradition still unfolding.
As the first in a new annual series, ReVision welcomes seekers, skeptics, and faithful questioners to explore how ancient contemplative wisdom might help us reimagine the institutions, stories, and spiritual practices that shape us.
What Do We Do With Christianity?
Together, we’ll courageously reimagine a spirituality rooted in love and spacious enough for the complexity of our world today. Shaped by empire and by mystics, by resistance and renewal — what if Christianity could become something more alive and transformative through us?

Session Details
Mainstage Sessions — Webcast & In-person
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24
Session 1: ReVisioning Through Ancient Eyes: Choosing Contemplation and Action
CAC Core Faculty Dr. Brian D. McLaren and Dr. Carmen Acevedo Butcher, alongside CAC Staff Dr. Mike Petrow, reflect on two early Christian revolutionaries who innovated and embodied both contemplation and action, sparking a grassroots revolution of love even as the empire used Jesus’ name to justify violence. This session will invite you to recognize that same tension within Christianity today, and to see ourselves within it.
Session 2: ReCentering Jesus as Prophet in an Age of Outrage
The Everything Belongs podcast team will sit down with Fr. Richard Rohr to discuss the “missing chapter” of his book The Tears of Things: understanding Jesus as prophet and Christianity as a prophetic tradition.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25
Session 3: ReRooting Christianity in Contemplative Wisdom and Practice (Love, Help!)
CAC Core Faculty members Dr. Carmen Acevedo Butcher and Dr. James Finley will explore what Christianity becomes when contemplative wisdom and practice are at the center, and how this way leads to healing and transformation. Drawing from an ancient prayer from the beginning of the Contemplative Tradition, “Love, Help!” seeks to embody God’s presence and grace in repairing our souls and the world in our daily lives.
Session 4: ReImagining Christianity as Cherished Belonging (Love, Helps!)
Fr. Greg Boyle, founder of the nonprofit Homeboy Industries, shares what he has learned through the world’s most successful gang rehabilitation program about “cherished belonging” and the healing power of love in divided times. Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis will join the session to share with us about Communities of Fierce Freedom as we explore the idea that “Love, Helps!” — that love heals, restores, and should be the driving force behind action.
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 26
Session 5: ReMembering Compassion as Revolutionary Action
Historian Dr. Diana Butler Bass will trace how the grassroots revolution of a Christianity rooted in contemplation and compassion has changed the world, even in the face of conquest and control. Then, CAC Movement Partner Carlos Rodriguez will explore how we live out this contemplative and compassionate way of being in the world today.
Session 6: ReVisioning a Way Forward: Christianity as Action and Contemplation
Dr. Randy Woodley will share with us about moving from a God of Fear to a Spirituality of Healing. They’ll then be joined by CAC Dean Dr. Brian McLaren, and CAC Core Faculty Dr. Carmen Acevedo Butcher and Dr. James Finley, for a journey exploring how we live this wisdom forward into an uncertain future, even for those who don’t claim the name “Christian,” and those who do.
Workshop Sessions – In-person
Webcast attendees: We’re excited to offer you asynchronous community engagement and contemplative practices. Check back for more details closer to the event.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24
How Does Desert Spirituality Teach Us About Love and Resistance?
Tessa Bielecki, Mike Petrow
Return to the ancient headwaters of the Christian Contemplative Tradition to ask how the wisdom and practices of the Desert Fathers and Mothers (Desert Elders) can teach us how to say, “No,” to the culture of status, speed, and selfishness. Instead, learn to make love more real in your heart and the world. You’ll apply this wisdom to your own 21st-century lives, and explore where to find the deserts in the world and in our daily routines.
What Can We Learn About the Contemplative Tradition from an LGBTQ+ Lens?
Cassidy Hall, Gigi Ross, Mike Angell
Explore the contemplative tradition through an LGBTQ+ lens. Listening to several LGBTQ+ experiences, you’ll examine the gifts and wisdom this identity brings that invite us all into expressions beyond boxes and categories. All are welcome; there is no need to identify as LGBTQ+ to attend.
How Can Contemplation Help Us Forge a New Human-Earth Relationship?
Brian McLaren, Michele Dunne
Fr. Thomas Berry said that our most urgent and important challenge is to forge a “mutually-enhancing human-Earth relationship.” In this workshop, you’ll explore how contemplative practice and contemplative theology can help us in that great work. Brian McLaren and Michelle Dunn will facilitate, and you’re invited to join in the forging experience: In your individual lives and families, and in your faith communities.
How Can Centering Black Wisdom and Lived Experience in Contemplation Shape Our Faith?
Josue Perea
Explore how you can center Black wisdom and lived experience in contemplative offerings and knowledge sharing. Through engagement in contemplative practices rooted in Blackness, you’re invited to foster a deeper understanding of the Black contemplative tradition. By delving into rich texts, honoring the African Diaspora, and fostering a shared practice, you can join in empowering personal growth and collective healing.
How Do We Sustain Action in a Burn Out Society?
Dawson Allen, Jennifer Tompos, Jon Huckins, Adam Bucko
Hear from panelists who have been dedicated to a life of action and have experienced burnout. You’ll explore what it looks like to be sustainably and healthily engaged in social change.
What Does the Community of Creation Teach Us About Learning and Belonging?
Randy Woodley, Barb Lopez
Explore the stark differences between Western and Indigenous ways of learning — one rooted in competition and individual achievement, another in relationship and connection to all life. Discover how choosing harmony over conquest and community over isolation helps us flourish as the interconnected beings we were created to be.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25
What Do We Do with the Church?
Cassidy Hall, Jacqui Lewis, Mike Angell
What does it mean to be the church in a world of churches with such varying experiences and beliefs, which sometimes help and sometimes harm? In this session, you’ll be invited to envision and reimagine what the church can be for times like these. Through engaging conversations led by two pastoral leaders, you can expect to leave this session feeling hopeful about what we do with the church.
How Can Everyday Life Become Sacred Practice?
Jim Finley, Carmen Acevedo Butcher
Explore the ordinary activities that deepen God’s presence in your life, how you can experience these as personal invitations, and how you can put what’s given to you in these rendezvous into the whole day. Join Carmen as she leads a chanting practice and Jim as he leads a guided meditation.
How Can Grief Become a Spiritual Path and Practice?
Mirabai Starr, Mike Petrow
Join in wisdom and practices that help you to explore grief as a path that you can choose to walk on purpose, with purpose, as the alchemizing of great love and great suffering transforms into compassion and wisdom.
How Does Art Become a Prophetic Voice?
Drew Jackson, Paul Swanson
From ancient times to the modern day, there has been a dynamic interplay between art and the prophetic. In this workshop, you’ll join poets and CAC staff in exploring the idea of the artist as prophet. You’ll also be encouraged to attune your ears to the prophetic wisdom in the art all around you.
How Can Non-Profits Live Out a Prophetic Calling?
Carlos Rodriguez, Michael Poffenberger, Josué Perea
Reflect on how non-profit organizations can be a medium for prophetic work in the world. Grounded in the lived experience of non-profit leaders, you’ll explore the gifts and limits of non-profits as tools to support transformation.
How Can We Heal Soul and Society Through Pilgrimage?
Jon Huckins
Experience pilgrimage as public theology — a sacred practice of personal and societal healing. Getting proximate to personal and societal wounds, pilgrimage disrupts the assumptions of the dominant culture by bringing you close to the human stories and impact of unjust systems, reorienting you toward the way of Jesus — a way marked by love, justice, and embodied hope.
