2025 Daily Meditations: Being Salt & Light

Learn to transform ourselves and others through the way we show up in our day-to-day lives.

How do we embody the call to be salt and light — a transformative presence — in our lives and communities? This year we invite you to reimagine Jesus’ timeless metaphors, exploring how to live deeply and with trust amid life’s unknowns, while our actions, words, and presence continue to reflect Love.

Our 2025 Daily Meditations theme Being Salt and Light is inspired by Matthew 5:13–15:

You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by people. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand and it gives light to all who are in the house. Your light must shine before people in such a way that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”

What Does It Mean To Be Salt and Light?

Just as a flickering lamp brings warmth to a room, we’re called to shine courageously, embodying hope and deep love for ourselves and our communities — even amid life’s struggles. Throughout 2025, the Daily Meditations will journey into the nuances of being salt and light: a path of bold, transformative presence that embraces unknowing over certainty, holds action and stillness in balance, and finds worth in seasons of struggle as much as in moments of clarity.

Being Salt and Light calls us to live in the flow of action and contemplation — a rhythm central to CAC’s mission. As we respond to the world’s ongoing struggles with justice and compassion, we’re also invited into a deep stillness that refines our loving presence, empowering us to embody light and hope amid life’s uncertainties.

“In Jesus’ framing, being salt and light is a big deal. They are being words that involve doing, ‘being’ things, that are by their very nature catalytic and transformative.”

—Brian McLaren

This year’s Daily Meditations on Being Salt and Light invite us into a way of seeing that unites our beliefs with how we live and serve. Together, we’ll deepen into a contemplative practice that nurtures ongoing transformation and draws us toward acts of love that ripple through our lives and communities.

Each week in this year’s Daily Meditations, we will explore a topic within the larger theme. On Saturday, a summary email will offer an overview including reflections, practices, and closing thoughts about that week’s meditations. Readers can learn from and with each other through weekly conversations on Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and Daily Meditations interviews and practice videos on YouTube.
