About Us
Working together for a more just and connected world.
The Center for Action and Contemplation (CAC) is an educational nonprofit that introduces seekers to the contemplative Christian path of transformation. Founded in 1987 by Franciscan Richard Rohr, our mission is to introduce Christian contemplative wisdom and practices that support transformation and inspire loving action.
Core Values
We’re looking for people who align with our values.
At the CAC, we try and model a different way of being and working, not just by what we write or the content we produce, but through our organizational commitments and practices. As Father Richard teaches, the best criticism of the bad is the practice of the better, and discovering better ways of working takes practice and daily commitment.
Humility
What we do isn’t about us, but about our mission and message. We strive for excellence in our work while recognizing that we are all works in progress. We know some things and don’t know many things; we have a point of view, but it’s not the only point of view. We view our mistakes and failures as wonderful teachers, and we rely upon the help of other people, organizations, communities, and wisdom traditions to realize our vision.
Truthfulness
We believe in the power of prophetic wisdom. We trust that speaking the truth directly, with compassion, is more generative than saying what we believe people want to hear. We strive to be transparent, sharing our mistakes along with our successes, and matching our words with our actions. We share and are present to each other’s needs.
Simplicity
We do what is ours to do in service to our mission and nothing more. We value clarity over comprehensiveness and work hard to create solutions that are elegant and beautiful in their simplicity. We do not seek the best, newest, or more of anything unless it helps others. We remain attuned to one another as we work, not allowing busyness to obscure that which is most essential.
Solidarity
Our work is built on identifying with the plight of each other, the communities we serve and inhabit, and our common planetary home. We see spiritual awakening as leading inseparably to struggles for social and political liberation, and to a focus on personal transformation as part of realizing our vision for a more just and loving world.
Our Culture
We rely on our staff to help build an organizational culture that is healthy, professional, mission-centered, and congruent with our values.
We are passionate about growing as professionals in pursuit of the CAC’s mission while remaining grounded in our values of humility, simplicity, truthfulness, and solidarity. We invite all who join our team to practice our core belief that “the best criticism of the bad is the practice of the better,” and to engage challenges and opportunities with an open and creative mind.
We believe that diversity makes us better. The CAC welcomes and provides equal employment opportunities (EEO) to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to age, race, color, national origin, ancestry, religion, gender and gender identity, sexual orientation, family medical history or genetic information, pregnancy, parental status, military service, veteran status, citizen status, political affiliation, disability status, or any other non-merit-based factor.
Open Positions
Help us co-create a world where everything and everyone belongs.
The CAC exists to awaken a more loving world through the teaching and practice of the Christian contemplative tradition. We are looking for mission-aligned staff with the professional skills and experience needed to scale our work and reach a larger audience.
Benefits
CAC offers a holistic benefit package to support life at work and life outside of work.
We hope that each member of our staff can develop a rich spiritual life, relationships of care, and a sense of vocation through their work that also carries out beyond the walls of our organization.
Embody the mission
CAC provides employees with a 5-day personal retreat each year that allows our team members to experience the gifts of a contemplative experience. Staff are also invited to participate in a daily morning meditation.
learn From our wisdom teachers
CAC employees have access to our world-renowned teachers through talks, events, and free access to our digital library. We encourage our team members to explore and learn by providing them with five free books from our bookstore every year.

Location
The CAC is headquartered in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
When Father Richard founded the CAC, he chose New Mexico after developing an affinity for it during a year he spent as a Franciscan novice working with the people of Acoma Pueblo. He considered New Mexico symbolically appropriate for his ministry as a place on “the edge of the inside” of the American empire, where the experiences of indigenous, immigrant, and other marginalized communities are visible; where the desert landscape has long drawn spiritual seekers and innovators; and where both the Mexican border and the birthplace of the nuclear bomb provided opportunities for local activism.
