Environmental Practices

We have implemented several practices to reduce CONSPIRE 2020’s impact on the environment, like choosing a green facility to host the conference, and purchasing carbon offsets for 2,000 attendee flights.

What is carbon offsetting?

Human interaction and physical connection are important. When we choose to travel, there is a significant environmental cost—fuel, food, lodging, waste—leaving a carbon impression that contributes to climate change. Travel can account for up to 90% of a large event’s carbon footprint. In addition to other environmentally friendly actions and practices we can do, carbon offsets help minimize that impact by supporting projects in communities across the United States that reduce emissions beyond what we can achieve through personal action.

The Center for Action & Contemplation’s offset purchase will reduce emissions of 911 mT of CO2e, equivalent to CO2 emissions from the electricity use of 137 homes for one year or almost 195 passenger vehicles (source: EPA). We purchased credits through The Good Traveler, a program operated by the nonprofit Rocky Mountain Institute.
