Commemorating 30 Years of the Center for Action and Contemplation
On October 12, 1987, Father Richard Rohr sat down in a small office in his parish in Albuquerque, New Mexico, ready to work for peace and social change in a new way. This was the formal beginning of the Center for Action and Contemplation, an organization that sought to integrate non-dual, prayerful consciousness with compassionate service and activism. Here we are, 30 years later, still working, as Father Richard says, “on the edge of the inside” of Christianity—free to teach the alternative orthodoxy of both praxis and prayer, rooted in the Christian contemplative tradition and welcoming of all faiths. For the last 30 years, our name has held us to our vocation and mission: transforming consciousness and empowering people to be instruments of peaceful change.
Fr. Richard writes, “Our orthodoxy is not right and theirs wrong. It is just alternative and not as easily seen. So we thank God for doing so much right—even while we did plenty wrong—in our process of growing up. We ask forgiveness from any whom we have disappointed or offended. We also ask for your prayers, that we can continue to do God’s work for the healing of our suffering world. Without God, we cannot. Without us, God will not.”
In honor of our past and inspired by the path ahead, we’ve created many opportunities for friends and supporters to join us in commemorating this milestone. Watch this page and our social media channels for additional ways to participate in the coming weeks.

Oneing: “Politics and Religion”
The fall edition of CAC’s bi-annual journal, Oneing, explores the often taboo topics of politics and religion. As Richard Rohr states in his introduction, “There is no such thing as being non-political. Everything we say or do either affirms or critiques the status quo. Even to say nothing is to say something.” New and familiar voices speak truth to power, drawing from decades of diverse experiences in contemplative activism. “Politics and Religion” includes articles by Joan Chittister, Rose Marie Berger, Simone Campbell, Avideh Shashaani, John Esposito, Rev. angel Kyodo Williams, and others.
